Why are flowers and wreaths given at funerals?

Which flowers are considered a bad omen when given in sympathy?

I remember hearing that you shouldn’t give someone in hospital red and white flowers on account of it being a bad omen ..
I also remember someone telling me that there are rules regarding funerals/deaths, it was something that you should avoid putting on the coffin or a certain colour you should avoid as it will show the face of the next person to die . Or something along those lines!

Anyone shed any light??

Funeral Poem about roses or flowers -?

My best friends mum died last week and the funeral is on Thursday. We are handing out wooden roses at the funeral as she had a rose by her bedside until she died, and she loved them. She was like a mum to me when we were growing up and I am going to be doing a reading at the funeral that I would like to coincide with the rose theme.

I have already seen the’ funeral rights of the rose’ poem but don’t feel that it fits. Can anyone help with either famous, non famous or self written poems that would be suitable?
